私が、デルモア・シュワルツの名前をふたたび強く意識するようになったのは、
マガジンハウスの文芸誌『鳩よ！』の２００１年１２月号で「坪内祐三 いつも読書中」という特集が組まれ、その中で坪内祐三がデルモア・シュワルツの『スクリーノ』という短篇を翻訳し、
「必敗者シュワルツ」という刺激的なエッセーを寄せていたからである。
この『スクリーノ』も「映画」と「映画館」が主題になっていた。
坪内祐三さんは、その後、２００７年に『変死するアメリカ作家たち』を上梓する。
この本は、一九九一年から未来社のＰＲ誌『未来』に断続的に連載された２０世紀のアメリカ文学で変死したマイナー作家たちを描いたポルトレがもとになっており、
その巻頭を置かれていたのがデルモア・シュワルツだった。
そのほかにハリー・クロスビー、ナサニェル・ウエスト、ロス・ロックリッジ、ウェルドン・キースというシブい名前が並んでいる。
坪内さんによれば、
当初は、さらにジェイムズ・エイジーとリング・ラードナーのふたりの作家を加えて一冊にまとめる構想があったようで、本来なら最初の彼の著作になるはずであったという。
この頃、神田神保町の北沢書店のバーゲンだったかで、五百円ぐらいで『Ｓelected Ｅssays of Ｄelmore Ｓchwartz』を見つけた。
デルモア・シュワルツの詩作と小説以外の評論、エッセイを集成した大部のハードカバーで、私は、拾い読みしているうちに、
デルモア・シュワルツは、ほぼ同世代のジェイムス・エイジーにどこか似ているなと思った。
ジェイムズ・エイジーは、アメリカが生んだ最高の映画批評家であり、優れた詩人、作家、シナリオライターでもあったが、デルモア・シュワルツと同様、
過度のアルコール中毒と憂鬱症のために、やはり〈変死〉している。

マガジンハウスの文芸誌『鳩よ！』の２００１年１２月号で「坪内祐三 いつも読書中」という特集が組まれ、その中で坪内祐三がデルモア・シュワルツの『スクリーノ』という短篇を翻訳し、
「必敗者シュワルツ」という刺激的なエッセーを寄せていたからである。
この『スクリーノ』も「映画」と「映画館」が主題になっていた。
坪内祐三さんは、その後、２００７年に『変死するアメリカ作家たち』を上梓する。
この本は、一九九一年から未来社のＰＲ誌『未来』に断続的に連載された２０世紀のアメリカ文学で変死したマイナー作家たちを描いたポルトレがもとになっており、
その巻頭を置かれていたのがデルモア・シュワルツだった。
そのほかにハリー・クロスビー、ナサニェル・ウエスト、ロス・ロックリッジ、ウェルドン・キースというシブい名前が並んでいる。
坪内さんによれば、
当初は、さらにジェイムズ・エイジーとリング・ラードナーのふたりの作家を加えて一冊にまとめる構想があったようで、本来なら最初の彼の著作になるはずであったという。
この頃、神田神保町の北沢書店のバーゲンだったかで、五百円ぐらいで『Ｓelected Ｅssays of Ｄelmore Ｓchwartz』を見つけた。
デルモア・シュワルツの詩作と小説以外の評論、エッセイを集成した大部のハードカバーで、私は、拾い読みしているうちに、
デルモア・シュワルツは、ほぼ同世代のジェイムス・エイジーにどこか似ているなと思った。
ジェイムズ・エイジーは、アメリカが生んだ最高の映画批評家であり、優れた詩人、作家、シナリオライターでもあったが、デルモア・シュワルツと同様、
過度のアルコール中毒と憂鬱症のために、やはり〈変死〉している。
ピューリッツァー賞を獲ったエイジーの唯一の長篇小説『家族の中の死』も自伝的な作品で、父親とチャップリンの映画を見に行った幼少時の場面が印象的に描かれていた。
デルモア・シュワルツも、Ｔ・Ｓ・エリオット、エズラ・パウンド、Ｗ・Ｈ・オーデンをめぐる詩論、ヘミングウェイ、フォークナー、ジイドについての作家論などのほかに、
映画評論も手がけている。
