【朗報】
「電子マネーをチャージ（charge=入金）は意味不明な和製英語でネイティブには通じない」
という俗説を忘れたくない勢がとうとうEnglish板に殴り込み
→「辞書に載ってる」の声に何事も無く爆発四散

・chargeは元々「荷車に貨物をつける・積む」という意味で、
そこから「容器などに中身を入れる」意味と
「人に義務や重荷を背負わせる＝負担させる、請求する」意味に派生した
・クレジットカードを使うときchargeを使うのは「カードで払う」意味ではなく
「カードに積み込む（ツケにして後で請求する）」や「カード会社に積み込む（背負わせる、請求する）」意味。
chargeには「お金を払う」意味や「残高が差し引かれる」ニュアンスは存在しない。
・電子マネーをチャージする場合、海外の英語圏ではchargeはあまり使われない。
「容器をいっぱいにする」「飲み物などをコップに注ぎ足す」意味のtop up(top off)などがよく用いられる(他にloadやreload、fillやrefill等の用例もある)。
ただ、前述の通りchargeは「積む・詰める」意味が基本で中身を使って減らすようなイメージはなく、辞書などでもtop upの類義語として紹介されていることが多いので
うっかりchargeと言ってしまっても、全然通じないわけでは無い。
・実際に海外でもchargeで通じる例としては
apple社のiPhone7が日本のFeliCa(Suica)に対応した際の海外報道で
Suicaの残高を追加する行為が、特に何の注釈もなく普通にchargeと呼ばれていた件などがある。
・最近、日本のインターネット上では「chargeはお金を払うという意味があるので電子マネーをチャージするという言い方は海外で全く通じない」という主張が見られるが、
そもそもchargeにお金を払うという意味がないのでこの説は明確な間違いである。
イギリス人やアメリカ人が書いた「日本で出版された日本語の英語雑学本」にそう書いてあった？

こういう「文化の違いから来る言い方の違い」みたいなものを把握するのも英語学習では重要
