- おお、俺はずっと自分でスレを建てようとしても、この一年くらい
「立たなかった」んだけど、今日、奇跡的に立ったぞお。
Edgar Allan Poe とか Lord Byron とか Wordsworth とか、
あるいは Charles Bukowsky とか、ともかくいろんな詩人が書いた
英語の詩について語りたい。他の言語の詩を排除はしたくないんだけど、
一応は英語の詩に限っておくね。
ほいでもって、このスレにも嵐さんたちが疾風怒濤の如く吹きすさぶとは
思うけど、頑張って続けて行こう。

- ご存知だとは思うけど、英語の詩だけでなく、著作権の切れた文学作品なら、ネット上でいくらでも読めるよね。
その中でも、詩は、例の Project Gutenberg だけでなく、たくさんのウェブサイトで
有名な詩人の全作品を整理して掲載している。たとえば、

ジョン・ダンの日本における評価とかは知らん。
けど、昔日本で「知の巨人」とかちやほやされた人が、「日本で詩人つったら3人」って言った、
その3人のうちの一人が、死ぬ間際にジョン・ダンの詩の一部をパクったって知られてる程度には知名度ある。

これでおわり。

- 押韻は上から順にaabbccddd。まあ分かると思うけど。
あと、ドラマチックモノローグ。誰か想定された相手（それは読者の想像力に任される）
に語りかけるように詩は進んでいく。これダンの得意技。
wikiには
＞たとえば、『蚤（The Flea）』という詩では、型破りなことに、恋人たちの血を吸う蚤がセックスのメタファーに使われている
ってあるけど、それ以外にも例えてる。イメージはコロコロ変わっていく。
ダンの凄さは人が思いつかないような具体的イメージや抽象的イメージを結びつけて見せたことにある。
それがメタフィジカルコンシート(metaphysical conceit)って技法って呼ばれてて、
そこから形而上学詩人のパイオニアとかって呼ばれてるんだけどどうでしょう。

辞書とか資料とかを見る時間がなくても、せめて表面上の意味だけは
何とか理解できて楽しめる。この詩は、気に入ったよ。
Shakespeare の sonnet の第二弾の方は、今の僕の力では、辞書とか資料を
使ってじっくり読まないとちんぷんかんぷん。今は時間がないんで、
味わえない。Shakespeare くらいは、辞書なしでも何とか楽しめるように
なりたいもんだ。

読んだんだけど、粗筋がつかめただけで、その面白さが、まだよくは感じ取れない。

Who are a little wise, the best fools be. ちょっと賢い奴が1番のバカに。

古い英語の理解力が素晴らしいからでしょうね。三浦さんの翻訳を頼りにして
再び辞書をあちこち引っ張り回して、やっと僕なりに、昨日よりもはるかに深く
この詩とその英文の構造や意味を理解することができました。
いやあ、勉強になりました。

って詩を読んでて疑問に思ったのですが
２部の頭にある

って文章はどんな意味なのでしょうか？
特にbalks accountってのが難しいです
balkっていろんな意味があって中にperfectって意味もあるようなのでおそらく詩の
流れからこれだと思うんですがaccountって？

誤訳の可能性に気をつけて！何よりも文脈のニュアンス重視で和訳しました。
自分、文法苦手なので、「なんでこここういう訳になるの？」とか言われても、
「前後の文脈のバランス的にこれがしっくり来ると思って」としか説明できないところも……
文法的に直訳しつつ作者が何を表現したいのか見当つける→そのニュアンスを意識して意訳
ってやったので……あくまで参考程度に。
ちなみに今回使った辞書は英辞郎 on the WEBです。
ODEとか、学者しか持ってないんじゃなかろうか。

Whitman の詩に出てくる "balks account" については、僕はこう思います。
まず、balk はここでは他動詞ですが、他動詞としての意味をいろいろ調べても、
どうやらここでは、 to check, to prevent, to thwart つまり「〜を避ける、阻止する」
というような意味のようです。
次に account は「説明、話、語り聞かせること」というような意味のようです。
したがって、"balks accout" は「〜は説明を拒否する」すなわち「説明のしようがない」
とか「語りようがない」というような意味だと思います。
だから、
"The love of the body of man or woman balks account, the body itself balks account
これは、次のような意味だと思います。
「男であれ女であれ、その肉体に対する愛については、語りようがない(説明のしようがない)。

つまり、言葉を失ってしまうほど、人間の肉体は完璧に美しい、と言っているような気がします。

宿題に出ていたんですよｗｗ実は

でも、いろんな本を読んで今はWhitmanを読んでますがちょっとハマってます
とくに今回の詩は人間賛歌とも取れる壮大なテーマにちょくちょく見える

上記の詩を今さっき読み終えた。知らない単語のオンパレードだったので、
一行ごとに辞書を引きながらゆっくり読んだ。すごく時間がかかった。
なんでこのしを読もうと思ったかというと、Tomas Hardy の小説に
"Far from a Madding Crowd" っていうタイトルのものがあるけど、
そのタイトルが実は上記の詩から来ていることを初めて知って、
この詩の全文を読んでみたくなったからだ。けっこう長い詩だ。
なお、Hardy の小説のタイトルが出てくる箇所は、次の通り。
Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life 75

- Virginia Woolf の "Mrs. Dalloway" を読んでると Shakespeare の台詞がよく出てくる。
"Fear no more the heat o' the sun" っていう言葉も何度か出てきたので気になって
調べてみたら、これも Shakespeare だった。改めてその一節をすべて読んでみたけど、
辞書を引かなくても大体の意味がわかるからびっくりした。Shakespeare って僕にとっては
難しいと思いがちだけど、大雑把になら辞書なしでも理解できる部分もけっこうありそう。
